Backpacking Recipes For Trail Or Home Preparation

Even when wandering through the wild, there are people who like to cook and when the urge hits them, it is nice to have some backpacking recipes to indulge in. Others, however may want to have their food ready to heat and eat before they leave civilization and use their backpacking recipes to prepare meals ahead of time.

Cooking on the trail can be a fun experience and, if done properly, perfectly safe. Typically, cooking with water or in a pan over an open fire offers family togetherness on the trail, and knowing what foods can be used efficiently backpacking recipes can help provide healthy, tasty foods cooked in the open. Obviously, there are going to be some ingredients that do not lend themselves to being carries in your backpack, such as fresh milk, but substitutes will be available.

Dried oriental noodles are a popular light weight food many carry in their packs, but even the flavored variety can leave something lacking. Just a little more weight can provide added nutrition as well as tasty backpacking recipes by turning one of these packages into turkey tetrazini for three. You are going to boil water to use anyway, so once you do use about three cups and mix in three servings of dry mushroom soup mix. Once completely mixed, strain and add a five ounce can of turkey. Open the ramen noodles and throw away the flavor packet if you did not leave it at home and add to the water. Cook for about two minutes and serve to your amazed family and friends.

Dry Ingredients Lighter To Carry

Another of the popular backpacking recipes includes cashew rice curry. Start with 3 and a half cups of water and mix one quarter cup of dry milk with enough water to make a paste. Add the rest of the water and bring to a boil. Stir in two cups of instant rice, cover and cook until all the water is absorbed, usually in about 20 minutes. Stir in a quarter pound of cashew pieces and two ounces of cheddar cheese, grated and cook until cheese is melted.

Many of the backpacking recipes can be cooked over an open fire with only one pot or pan without having to carry a ton of ingredients. Many of the ingredients can be found dried and when prepared properly can be healthy and taste good as well. For those who consider cooking on the hiking path out of the question, stick to freeze dried meals that only requiring boiling water.
