Choosing A Boat PropellerChoosing And Testing The most common type of propeller is the aluminum boat propeller. This type of propeller is the most durable and can be used on almost any boat. The strongest boat propellers are stainless steel and have a longer life spa because of their stiffer blades. For emergency situations, plastic and composite boat propellers are generally used. It is always best to have a variety of propellers to choose from and they need to be tested before being purchased. Be sure to have a tachometer that will take an accurate reading of the RPM's. This is important because you do not want the RPM's to run too high for the sake of the engine. Make sure that the speedometer is working properly and that it will take an accurate measure of the boat's speed. The boat load, engine height, trim angle and water conditions should be the same every time a boat propeller is tested in order to insure accurate results from the same set of conditions. Maintenance Once you have chosen a boat propeller it is important to always check it for damages. If any of the blades are bent or there are nicks in the blades, the propeller could cause vibrations, which is harmful to the engine and ultimately results in the boat not performing satisfactorily. Always keep the boat propellers clean; accumulation of the dirt and slime that grows in fresh water can damage the propellers and slow the performance of the boat. It is always recommended to clean not only your boat regularly, but also to clean the propellers. Good boat and propeller maintenance will not only extend the look and life of your boat, but will enhance your boat's performance. This only supports the importance of keeping your boat clean and choosing the right propeller for your boat. |
