Brewing about your Camping Coffee Maker

Some people are so dependent on that first cup of java in the morning that they almost do not go camping because they will miss it so much. Luckily, with a camping coffee maker, you can have your outdoor adventure and your aromatic brew too. There are several models to choose from and they each make coffee in their own way so it is up to you to decide which would be the best option for you to work with.

The Percolator - An Old Standby

The percolator is a time honored tradition when it comes to the camping coffee maker because it has been used for generations for making coffee outdoors away from any power supply and the method has not really changed. Most percolators are made from stainless steel these days or even a metal pot with a hardened enamel finish because these are most impervious to the wear and tear they receive being toted around during camping and hiking trips.

This old standby can be found in various sizes which indicate the number of cups of coffee it can produce at one time. Basically, you place water in this camping coffee maker along with coffee grounds in the basket it has with it. As the water boils, it shoots upward through a tube which then allows the boiling water to filter through the coffee grounds. This process is repeated and you must watch the bubbling within the glass top to watch for any color changes which can be a sign of the coffee's strength.

Camp Stove Option

There is a new type of camping coffee maker which helps make a great tasting pot of coffee and you do not even need any electricity. This coffee maker can be placed on the burner of a camp stove to brew. It looks remarkably like a regular coffee maker with its removable carafe, coffee basket and housing unit that you pour water into.

Coffee Press

Sometimes called a French press, this camping coffee maker is portable so you can take it anywhere where you can boil water. It basically looks like a tall clear glass pitcher in which you place your coffee grounds at the bottom. Then you slowly fill with boiling water and allow steeping for several minutes before you depress the plunger in this camping coffee maker to serve. With this method, because there is no filter, you will likely get more coffee grounds than you realize in each cup of coffee.

While there are one or two more different types of the camping coffee maker available, the press, camp stove option and the percolator are the most popular. You just have to decide how picky you are about your morning cup of java before choosing a camping coffee maker that best suits your needs.
