Living With High Blood PressureThe hardest things to do in the world are to quit smoking and to lose weight. A few years ago I was confined to my couch for months because of two painful herniated discs in my back. For eight months I only left my house to go to the doctor and I only got off the couch when I absolutely had to. I was not eating at all and when I did eat it was a painful experience. During that 8 months my doctor started treating my hypertension. He noticed that my blood pressure was becoming dangerously high so he put me on medication. I tried to tell him that it was the pain but, he's the doctor, and he put me on the medicine. My blood pressure remained elevated for a while and for months the pills were not helping. I lost over 30 pounds in those 8 months and as I had reached a point of significant weight loss my blood pressure dropped. By the time the 8 months was over my blood pressure was normal and I was off the pills. Within 6 months I had gained the weight back as I have no will power when it comes to losing weight and my pressure went back up. He put me on stronger pills and now my blood pressure is under control again. Does weight loss eliminate hypertension? In my experience it does. To The Living End? My mother is convinced that hypertension will be what eventually takes her from this mortal plane and the doctors told us that extended hypertension is what took my uncle. My mother and I are big people, not like the ones you see on television that need a crane to leave the house, but we could stand to lose a few. It is not difficult to imagine us with hypertension. But my uncle was as thin as a rail and the theory from the doctors is that my uncle's hypertension was hereditary. Therefore I have the double whammy against me of genetics and my size. Hypertension can come at you from so many angles and it is something you need to address if it comes up in your life. There are things you can do to help control hypertension if you get it. The main thing is to see your doctor and work with your doctor to put together a plan that works for you. If you are a bigger person then talk with your doctor about medicines that can help. It is always nice to say that someone should lose weight for their health but saying it and doing it are always two different things. There is medication that can help you control hypertension and you should get all the help you can. |
