Have you been diagnosed with high blood pressure and you are wondering what types of high blood pressure medication that your doctor may prescribe to you? That is no wonder because there are a variety of high blood pressure medications that your doctor will have to choose from to match your situation and needs. You should learn about the high blood pressure medication types so that you will be familiar with the drug or drugs that you may take for your condition.

Alpha Blockers

Alpha-blockers are used to block production of the norepinephrine hormone that is responsible for restricting small blood vessels and this medication type slows the heart rate. Alpha-blockers can cause a strong effect the first time that it is taken and is responsible for side effects such as a pounding heart, headaches, weakness, fainting, light-headedness, low blood pressure and nausea.

Angiotensis Converting Enzyme Inhibitors

Angiotensis converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are used to counteract the effects of angiotensis II that constricts blood vessels, which can aggravate high blood pressure. The angiotensis converting enzyme acts to help the blood vessels open up for better circulation and lowering blood pressure. ACE inhibitors can have some side effects including low blood pressure, light-headedness, headache, weakness, drowsiness and other side effects.

Beta-Blockers

Beta-blockers work by slowing the heart rate and reducing the amount of blood that is pumped by the heart. Beta-blockers are not for all patients because of the serious side effects that have been reported.

Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium channel blockers are used for reducing the amount of calcium that enters the circulation system since calcium can add to plaque in the arteries and can cause the heart to contract. Side effects that have been reported include low blood pressure, headaches, light-headedness, constipation and other side effects.

Diuretics

Diuretics work by getting rid of excess water and salt from the body, which eases blood flow and relaxes the circulation system. Diuretics are not advised in the case of some cardio vascular diseases and there are serious side effects when this medication is taken that include higher cholesterol levels, fainting, impotence, gout and other side effects.

Nervous System Inhibitors

Nervous system inhibitors are drugs that are used to relax the blood vessels through affecting the nerves that control them. An increased blood flow is possible with this medication. Side effects include weakness, feeling of exhaustion, anxiety, trembling, light-headedness, chest pain and other serious effects.

Your doctor will be able to prescribe a course of treatment based on different factors and depending on your situation; you may be prescribed more than one high blood pressure medication. A sort of balance and check can be arrived at so that you receive a precise dosage for your high blood pressure medication for your individual case.
