Determine How Many Calories Burned While Running

Running is a great exercise because it's easy to do and you can do it indoors or outdoors any time of the year. Running is also one of the most effective ways to burn calories whether as part of your usual keep fit routine or as a regime to lose weight. How many calories are burned while running depends on various factors such as your weight, miles run, and the intensity of your run. You can increase how many calories are burned while running by playing around with these factors and enjoy the benefits.

The Length of Your Run

How many calories are burned while running depends on the length of your run. If you are running for a mile then you are roughly burning about 100 calories. The amount of calories varies depending on how much you weigh, you will burn more the heavier you are and vice versa. The more miles your run the more calories you can burn. Start of slow and build up your mileage, adding more miles from week to week. Pushing your body past the limits it is used to will also keep you from plateauing. You can keep adding miles to your run as fast or as slow as you want, depending on your fitness level.

Increasing Intensity

The pace and terrain that you run also determines how many calories are burned while running. The faster you run the more calories you burn. Jogging throughout your workout will not burn as much calories as you might like so try and quicken your pace from time to time. Running on hills and steep surfaces can also boost how many calories are burned while running. For every degree of incline you can expect to burn about 10 percent more calories than you would on a flat surface. Running on hilly terrain is also great resistance training.

If you can't handle intensity in every workout then aim to have two days a week when you add intensity to your workout. Slowly incorporate intensity into all your workouts whether it's running as fast as you can or running up an incline. A treadmill is great in that you can control the incline and pace of the run, forcing yourself to run faster than you might outdoors. On the other hand running outdoors can be one of the most enjoyable activities, so pick an area that has enough hilly terrain to add to the intensity of your run.
