Indoor Swimming Pool Design Requires Proper Planning

An indoor swimming pool can provide year-round enjoyment and exercise. But there are some special problems associated with enclosing a swimming pool inside a building. However, with careful pre-planning and design and the involvement of qualified, experienced designers and builders, you can have the perfect indoor swimming pool, designed especially with your needs and your property in mind.

Planning for Your Indoor Pool

Before you begin construction of your indoor swimming pool, take some time to carefully consider your location. Are there unique architectural characteristics to your property that you want to accentuate or complement in the construction and design of your indoor swimming pool? How will you deal with high humidity and atmospheric corrosives? Both of these factors are present in any indoor pool application; they will degrade structural material over time if not allowed for. How will your pool enclosure affect the outdoor profile and landscaping of your home?

Vapor Barriers and Insulation

Though certainly not the most exciting components of indoor swimming pool design, properly installed vapor barriers and insulation are essential not only to the long term enjoyment of your pool, but also to the beauty and structural integrity of the pool enclosure and perhaps your entire home. The moisture leaching into the air from the pool naturally seeks a way to the drier air outside.

In doing so, it will, if left unchecked, seep into the inner walls and framing of the enclosure and any structure to which it attached, where it will spawn the growth of mildew and mold and will also cause or accelerate the deterioration of wood and finishes. One of the primary attributes of good indoor swimming pool construction, then, is the careful installation of a seamless vapor barrier as close as possible to the inside, finished surface of the entire pool enclosure. A properly executed design will also avoid penetrating the vapor barrier.

For instance, electrical boxes or conduits should be surface-installed if they are to be placed on walls incorporating the vapor barrier. Care should also be exercised in installing the insulation around the pool enclosure, since poor insulation leads directly to higher energy costs. Further, gaps in insulation create "cold spots" that promote moisture condensation. A well-executed indoor swimming pool design will give detailed attention to these two important aspects of moisture and humidity control.

Dehumidifiers

Maintaining correct climate conditions involves more than passive means, however. Proper dehumidifying equipment also helps control humidity and ensure maximum enjoyment for years to come.
