An Informational Guide to Mixed Martial Arts

There is martial arts and then there is mixed martial arts. A lot of people actually do not realize how different the two are, and although mixed martial arts are derived from the martial arts teachings, there are many extreme differences that need to be taken into consideration.

What is it?

Basically mixed martial arts is the classification given to a combat sport in which there are a variety of different fighting styles and techniques that are used, and this includes everything from punching and striking to grappling and wrestling. The mixed martial arts sport has been around for quite some time now, although its popularity has only really begun to prosper over the past few years in particular.

Because of this extreme popularity and fascination with the sport that has taken place, martial arts training in general and as well the overall combat effectiveness of it has evolved incredibly, and is practiced by literally hundreds of thousands of different people around the world.

You have probably seen mixed martial arts fighting on TV before, whereas only a few years ago the only real type of fighting aired on television was boxing. The UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, in particular has become notorious with this sport, and airs regular fights on TV.

They are a United States-based organization that was actually originally started as a tournament in which the sole purpose was to find the world's best fighters. The immediate popularity that showed through here was what quickly expanded the UFC and today it is one of the most well recognized and respected MMA related organizations in the world.

There are some really incredible mixed martial arts fighters out there today, one which you have surely heard of before being Chuck Liddell. Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell is just one of the many different fighters who fight for the UFC, and he has a very extensive background in both kickboxing and collegiate wrestling.

Rich Franklin is another of the most popular mixed martial arts fighters in the world, and he too currently fights for the UFC. He is definitely one of the fan favorites and actually was one of the coaches on a season of the Ultimate Fighter Championship television series.

There are so many different styles and elements that are incorporated into and included in mixed martial arts, and it is definitely a style of fighting that takes time and practice to learn.
