The Dos And Don'ts Of Outdoor Tanning

Everybody loves to have a well tanned body for which most people take their vacation to the sea beach destinations across the world. However, just basking in the sun would not give you a tan, just like carrying helium balloons would not make you fly. If you want to get a good tan you need to go by the rules. Do you know the rules of outdoor tanning?

The Dos

Do use previously tried and tested outdoor tanning products. Many people buy such products just before their outdoor tanning session only to discover that it does not really suit them, or worse - they are allergic to it. Choose and use already tried and tested products so you will not face any unpleasant surprises at the last minute.

Do use an SPF sunscreen lotion when you are going for outdoor tanning because the direct sun rays can be very harmful for your skin. An SPF of 6-10 would be just enough to protect you while still allowing the skin to acquire the color you want.

Do drink plenty of water while you are basking in the sun. The skin needs a lot of water and while you are outdoor tanning, the sun is robbing your skin and your body of moisture. This would result in rubber-like skin and possible dehydration - both highly unwanted side effects of having fun at the beach.

Do know your limitations. Do you have a sensitive skin? Do you burn easily? If you do, ensure that you do not expose yourself for too long to the harsh sun on the beach. Moderation is always the key to the best enjoyment.

The Don'ts

Don't stay out in the sun between 11 AM and 2 PM when the sun is at its worst. If you have to be out during this time wear a good sun lotion, a wide brim hat and plenty of water to drink.

Don't try to accelerate the tanning process. You will end up with blotchy skin and sun burns. The best would be to work out your tan gradually with about 2-3 hours exposure to direct sun every day.

Don't consume alcoholic drinks when you are basking in the sun. These enhance the dehydration process which can give unpleasant side effects. The strongest drink you can have is a beer. Ideally you should drink plenty of water while you are outside in the sun. Keep the partying for the night or when you are indoors/ shade.
