Making A Rowing Machine Comparison

Some may consider making a rowing machine comparison between the various models and brands of rowing machines to be somewhat unfair. After all, each different design and model of rowing machine has its own particular positives and it would be unfair to be dismissive of a model unless it was clearly a defective and flawed product. However, making a rowing machine comparison does not mean that the comparison has to center on good versus bad, better versus worse, etc. Instead, a rowing machine comparison can simply examine different models of rowing machines to describe them in a clear and concise manner.

A Rowing Machine Comparison Of The Old Rowing Machine Model

For those who are into classic, vintage models of rowing machines, the early designs of the classic rowing machine were constructed with metal coils. Yes, metal spring coils! These coils would provide resistance in the same way the modern rowing machines do. To make a rowing machine comparison between the old and new rowing machine model is not a very positive one for the old, classic model. The main problem with the classic model is that the metal spring coil can not increase its resistance. Since muscles only grow when they are overloaded, if the muscle becomes too used to a specific resistance it will stop growing. Even worse, the more and more the metal coil is used the coil will degrade and offer even less resistance.

If there is one positive to be mentioned here it would be that if the goal is a high number of repetitions to burn calories, the lack of resistance would be a minor point. Ultimately, however, the vintage model that is still sold in certain circles is not exactly the best purchase to make unless one were really on a budget and was only planning on using the rowing machine on an irregular basis.

Modern Rowing Machines

When looking at modern rowing machines, there are two types that exist: the pulley weight version and the wheel version. The pulley weight model relies on a pulley attachment that connects to a weighted load that can be increased or decreased depending upon the individual's particular wants and needs. The wheel system uses a metal cable that travels around a wheel like apparatus which has the ability to increase or decrease resistance. When making a rowing machine comparison between the two, it is clear that the weight system is better for building upper body mass while the wheel system is better for burning calories. Selecting one or the other will be based upon particular needs and goals as well as price: the wheel system is much less expensive and, additionally, it is also more portable. As such, the wheel system has become much more popular for home use while the weight system is more common in commercial gyms.
