These explorers could not visit the local library at that time to find a travel book to guide them. They set out on their sailing ships to find new lands, new commodities and new horizons.

Some of the brave men who first explored on sailing ships are now famous, and these men have places named after them. Some were on these ships sent by their governments on official business. If their sailing ships broke down or they were attacked by hostile forces, their government would not be able to save them. The sailing ships in ancient times were usually made of wood, and there were no ship repair shops in every port in case they got into trouble. When these ships returned, the explorers were able to enlighten the others in their homelands and show them goods from other places.

Although sailing ships were the most important sea vessels hundreds of years ago, there are still some of these majestic ships around for people to view. The beautiful sailing ships often gather at special events, and the audiences that view these vessels are awestruck by their beauty and majesty. These sailing ships are often seen in movies that tell the tales of pirates and warriors from many years ago. Some cities including Boston and San Diego have these majestic ships in their harbor where tourists flock for a glimpse.

People enjoy modern ships that they can sail around the world or around a harbor. In many coastal states, there are marinas filled with boats powered by sails. These ships come in tiny models and huge vessels with many large sails. International competitions are held to see which team can sail the fastest. They sail to win distinctive trophies that are coveted by all who enter the competitions. Sailing continues to be popular and many youngsters learn the techniques for harnessing the wind to move a boat and the occupants. Although there are many beautiful boats and ships powered by engines, the ships powered by sails will always have a certain charm.
