Understanding Sailing Terminology



Sailing is a very popular sport these days, but before a person starts in sailing it is important that they are aware of at least the basic sailing terminology so that they will understand how to sail the boat and the common phrases that are used while sailing.

The Basics

There is actually quite a lot of sailing terminology that one can learn, but a few basic terms in particular that are important. For instance, abaft means toward the stern of a boat, abeam means at right angles to the centerline of the boat, adrift means floating without any means of propulsion, aft means toward the stern of the boat, astern means towards the boat's stern, bail means to get rid of water that has accumulated in the boat, and beam refers to the widest part of a boat.

Centerboard is a pivoting board that prevents the boat from sliding sideways, centerline is the center of the boat, ensign is a flag indicating the nationality of the vessel, gaff means a spar in a gaff rig, hank is a snap made of plastic or stainless steel which is attached to the luff of the jib, kite is sometimes used to indicate spinnaker, and knot is a nautical term for speed.

Sailing terminology is very important and useful to learn, both for amateur and experienced sailors. Once the sailing bug bites it is definitely going to itch forever and there is always more to learn, and this is one of the most exciting facts about the sport of sailing.
